Systems Engineer Intern, Summer 2020 at Groupon
Chicago, IL, US

Groupon’s mission is to become the daily habit in local commerce and fulfill our purpose of building strong communities through thriving small businesses by connecting people to a vibrant, global marketplace for local services, experiences and goods. In the process, we’re positively impacting the lives of millions of customers and merchants globally. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success.

Groupon's Information Technology team may not be the obvious advocate of Groupon's success story, but we enable that success. Thousands of people need to feel confident that their tools work, and that's where we shine. As members of the Global Support Services team, we will offer insightful recommendations and provide real-world solutions to challenges that save the day! We work in small, independent teams and use agile practices to move quality code into production quickly. We collaborate with our product designers to conceive of and implement high impact technology that is defining how the world views local commerce. Our team is passionate about using technology to change the world. But, like Groupon itself, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

As a Systems Engineers, we’re looking for people who are excited to dive into projects, like troubleshooting but like preventing trouble even more, who can automate tasks and write tools, and who can communicate really well with a friendly group of both operations people and development people.

We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?

As an intern, you’ll get the following:

  • Exposure; Being a household name gives employees the opportunity to work in startup-like environment and focus on deeply interesting work that you wouldn’t get to do anywhere else - prepare to make a large scale impact in a short amount of time

  • Professional Development; Participate in weekly “lunch and learns” with other engineering and business functions, skill building workshops, and networking sessions

  • Fun; Explore the city through our planned intern social outings, and develop your network while getting to know your peers and Groupon’s leaders

  • Mentorship; Look forward to one-on-one time with dedicated managers and mentors to facilitate your growth throughout the summer internship experience

You’ll spend time on the following:

  • Provide critical insight into utilizing Linux systems to optimize the development and construction of dynamic web based applications

  • Address and troubleshoot technical development obstacles by creating systems to automate tasks and create web based tools to yield solutions

  • Utilize Linux servers to write tools to automate both routine and complex tasks, troubleshoot application and infrastructure issues, monitor applications and provide systems reporting

  • Close collaboration with development teams to design a scalable and supportable service-oriented architecture

  • Provide support in a 24×7 environment

We’re excited about you if you have experience:

  • Currently enrolled and working towards a BS degree in Computer Science

  • SQL (Sequel Query Language)

  • Designing, implementing and maintaining highly available services

  • Running load balanced services

  • Building scalable web services

  • Providing support in a 24×7 environment

  • UNIX or LINUX administration experience

  • Networking services (IPv4, IPv6, SSH, NTP, HTTPS, DHCP, or SNMP)

  • Clustering and BigData (ElasticSearch, Solr, or Hadoop)

  • Work on migrating services to AWS leveraging common tools like Docker, Kubernetes, S3, and EC2

  • Load balancing and proxying (A10, Netscaler, HAProxy, Nginx, or Apache)
