Hardware Architect - Packet Optical Communications (OTN Switching, L2) at Infinera Corporation

Infinera is seeking an experienced and energetic hardware architect to join the Embedded Architecture team and take the lead in the conceptualization and specification of cutting-edge optical transport products.  The focus of this role is embedded control of distributed systems and Layer 2/3 switching protocols and technologies.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition of the embedded control hardware, infrastructure for transport platforms across the organization, including processors and networking infrastructure.
  • Work closely with software architects and developers to understand and address control infrastructure requirements.
  • Serve as a focal point for cost/functionality/schedule tradeoffs.
  • Stay on top of the latest developments in processor, switching, memory/storage and FPGA technologies.  Establish and maintain relationships with key vendors.
  • Stay engaged throughout the entire development process in order to address issues, monitor compliance with requirements and ensure quality.
  • Interact with peer Infinera architects around the globe to enable common architectures and to achieve seamless control plane interworking between platforms

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of state-of-the-art embedded processors and layer 2/3 switches.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet and IP standards.
  • Understanding of real-time OS and layer 2/3 control plane software technologies
  • Mastery of control plane resilience/robustness issues and techniques.
  • Understanding of reliability/availability concepts and analysis.
  • Familiarity with timing technologies such as PTP and SyncE helpful.
  • Strong specification and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong background in communications hardware PCBA and/or ASIC/FPGA development.
  • Thorough knowledge of embedded processors and layer 2/3 switches.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet and OTN standards.
  • Familiarity with signal integrity and state-of-the-art SerDes technology
  • Understanding of real-time OS and layer 2/3 control plane software technologies
  • Mastery of control plane resilience/robustness issues and techniques.
  • Understanding of reliability/availability concepts and analysis.
  • Experience with Telcordia/ETSI standards compliance.
  • Familiarity with timing technologies such as PTP and SyncE helpful.
  • Familiarity with optical interface standards and client transceiver MSAs.
  • Strong specification and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, MS is preferred
  • 8+ years of optical transport architecture and engineering experience is required
  • Prefer at least 2 years of experience functioning as an “Architect”. We are NOT seeking just an Engineer “implementer” that has been told to put certain components on a board. This is a Senior Principal-level role, and we are seeking someone with an in-depth knowledge.
  • Prefer Expert experience in Layer 2/3 switching
  • Prefer Expert experience in Embedded Control processes, monitoring, etc.
  • Must be willing to be a fulltime employee (NO contractors)
  • Must live near the office in Ottawa, Canada or San Jose, CA.
