Senior Software Development Engineer, Data Science Platform at Groupon
Chicago, IL, US

Groupon’s mission is to become the daily habit in local commerce and fulfill our purpose of building strong communities through thriving small businesses by connecting people to a vibrant, global marketplace for local services, experiences and goods. In the process, we’re positively impacting the lives of millions of customers and merchants globally. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that encourages innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success. If you want to take more ownership of your career, then you're ready to be part of Groupon.

We're looking for someone to define guidelines and strategies for data science model training using Cloud technologies, and define control measurements and standards to access and utilize these technologies in the most efficient way. You’ll drive the migration of current data science models running on premises technologies to Cloud technologies and provide support to the data science team in the process. This includes taking ownership of current Data Science Platform components and proposing improvement and possible alternative solutions. You’ll develop high quality software programs, algorithms and automated processes that allow you to cleanse, integrate and evaluate large data sets from multiple disparate sources, while also creating a healthy partnership with the Data Science team in order to support them to achieve their goals on model development and training. You’ll also identify and communicate meaningful, actionable insights from large data and metadata sources to stakeholders.

We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?

You’ll spend time on the following:

  • Set standards and determine strategy for model migration in Groupon Cloud for Data Scientists.

  • Point for determining engineering strategy and guidelines for Data Science, and leading evaluation of emerging technologies with the team.

  • Take ownership of current Data Science Platform tools. Prepare and own deprecation of the current system on-prem and provide support for onboarding on Cloud tools.

  • Build successful relationships with Business and Product partners in Groupon

  • Innate ability to triangulate data from different sources to identify trends, opportunities and conclusions

  • Provide guidelines to design structured algorithms and procedures to provide visibility and solve for gaps within the supply chain

  • Collaborate with different teams (technical, operations, inventory, accounting).

We’re excited about you if you have:

  • ~ 7-10 years of professional experience, preferably in a supply chain/logistics BI role (not a must), with a rigorous course of undergraduate study in business, economics, mathematics, or engineering.

  • Software Development experience. Strong experience building systems and platforms.

  • Sagemaker, Java, Python and related tools experience is preferred.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal with the ability and confidence to succinctly convey complex information to management.

  • Excited by engineering platforms that serve a rapidly delivering data science team, working with data training, systematically testing hypotheses, and making objective decisions based on quantitative results and deductive reasoning

  • The confidence to challenge and voice opinions and the ability to influence others to adopt alternatives

We value engineers who are:

  • Customer-focused: We believe that doing what’s right for the customer is ultimately what will drive our business forward.

  • Obsessed with quality: We want to continue to deliver a 5-star rated experience with our apps

  • Team players. You believe that more can be achieved together. You listen to feedback and also provide supportive feedback to help others grow/improve.

  • Fast learners: We are always expanding the scope of our responsibility and stepping up to help address gaps. You’ll love being able to test multiple things and not be restricted to a single area.

  • Pragmatic: We do things quickly to learn what our customers desire. You know when it’s appropriate to diverge from established processes in order to ‘just get it done’, but without sacrificing the quality bar.

  • Collaborative: Getting things done at Groupon often involves reaching out across team boundaries to unblock or move things forward. You’re encouraged to do so and should not feel restricted to following the standard communication channels through management.
